Day 73: Creative Prompt 1

I’m in the process of publishing my first book, “60 Ways to Boost Your Creativity”, and I decided to demonstrate some of my prompts for getting into that creative groove. Today’s post is all about Drawing Prompt 1.

The ebook version can be purchased here:

The first prompt in the drawing section of my book is this:

“Draw a circle. Divide the circle into 4 parts (no, they don’t have to be equal). Draw a different pattern in each part. Fill the circle with these patterns.”

Here’s what that might look like:

Step 1: Start with a circle
Step 1: Start with a circle
Step 2: divide into 4 parts
Step 2: divide into 4 parts
Step 3: fill in one of the parts with any pattern you choose
Step 3: fill in one of the parts with any pattern you choose
Step 4: Fill in another part with a different pattern of your choice
Step 4: Fill in another part with a different pattern of your choice

Step 5: fill in the third part with a different pattern of your choice
Step 5: fill in the third part with a different pattern of your choice
Step 6: fill in the remaining portion with a different pattern of your choice, and you're done!
Step 6: fill in the remaining portion with a different pattern of your choice, and you’re done!

Here are some additional samples to show how simple or complex you might make your drawing:

Notice that my circles are not perfect, my lines are not straight and the filled areas are not always completely black. That’s ok.

If you use a fine-line marker, you will be forced to simply “go with the flow”, rather than constantly correcting your work. This is meant to be fun, so go have a play with it! You don’t have to show it to anyone if you don’t want to. Use some colors other than black, if you like. Add shading witha pencil, if you want to. This technique is very loosely based on the “Zentangle” technique. I am not affiliated with them in any way, I simply enjoy the technique. I have a small journal with dozens of this type of image, except they don’t start with a circle.

Well, that’s about it for tonight. If you give this prompt a try, I’d be interested in hearing from you. You can send me an email at Guide(AT)SerendipityMuse(DOT)com. Feel free to include your image, or a link to your image, if you like.
