I was thinking about that drawing prompt I wrote the other day, and this popped into my head:
If you recall, my original prompt talked about drawing a circle, then dividing it into 4 parts. When I drew it, I drew a circle, then drew an off-kilter “X” across the middle of it. The above popped into my head a few days ago, but I’m just getting around to making it. This might be considered a “template” of sorts for your own pattern explorations.
However, some people might not care for circles, so I also made this one:
I kind like that odd-shaped piece across the top. It completely changes the dynamic of the piece, I think.
Then there’s this one:
By mixing ovals and a straight line, and in extending one of the spaces outside the large oval, this template demonstrates that balance doesn’t have to equal symmetry. In fact, the two concepts don’t have to be in the same piece at all.
Anyway, these are free templates to try your hand at practicing random patterns in the defined spaces. Just click on the image and either print the larger version, or save it to your computer and play with it. If you do use them, I’d love to see what you make!
